Zephyr Point Conference Center
Zephyr Cove, Nevada
Tentative Retreat Schedule
We are again meeting at the beautiful Zephyr Point Conference Center at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The cost this year for 3 nights lodging with double occupancy and 8 meals will be $205. Again this year GBB is graciously covering all the instructors’ fees for the classes and the participants will be responsible only for the materials fees for any classes they wish to take. Scholarships to the retreat are available and the forms to apply for a scholarship are in the GBB library at the Larry D. Johnson Community Center.
A deposit of $35.00 is requested at the time of registering for the retreat. A sign-up sheet is available at all meetings or you can mail your check (made payable to Great Basin Basketmakers) to Karen Olson, 4201 Fairview Road, Reno, Nevada 89511. The balance of the retreat fees ($170) is due by the April meeting.
Everyone is encouraged to bring a basket or item for the raffle at the retreat. The Retreat Raffle proceeds pays for the instructors for next years retreat, so make those items for our raffle. Last year the raffle netted $1000, which is paying for this year's classes.
There are sign-up sheets for the classes being circulated at the April and May guild meetings. If you are not able to attend the meetings please email or call Karen Olson at 775 852-5401 or kvolson@charter.net The Random Weave Seaweed Basket Class is full at this time. We will begin collecting the materials fees at the guild meetings, make out your checks to the instructors. If you cannot attend the guild meetings, you can pay the materials fees upon arrival at the retreat.
 Wednesday Classes
Coiled Wire Medallion Taught by April Barber Wednesday, May 19, 2010 9 am to noon or 1 pm to 4 pm
For tools, I think anyone that has a wire cutter, flat-nose pliers with no teeth and round nose pliers should bring them. A #2 and #4 file is handy but not necessary as we can share. They can bring any 26 gauge colored or copper wire they have and beads they want to use or buy some from Cindy. A notebook and pencil are necessary to sketch out their design before beginning. There will be a $5 materials fee for wire

WOVEN RAIN STICK
Taught by Joan O’Brien Wednesday, May 19, 2010 9 am to noon or 1 pm to 4 pm
We will be weaving rain sticks utilizing golf tubes containing chicken wire and small pebbles. The spokes are ¼” flat reed and the weavers can be #3 or smaller round reed or ¼” or narrower flat reed. Yarn and ribbons can also be used. The reed will be dyed in various colors so no two rain sticks will look the same. Let your imagination run with this one! All the materials will be supplied including the leather end pieces and lacings. Beads and feathers will also be available. If you have leftover dyed reed that you would like to use up this is a good project to do that with.
Materials fee: $ 5.00
Thursday

Cherokee Double Wall Basket
Taught by Karen Rosselli Thursday, May 20, 2010 9 am to 4 pm
Learn how to make a traditional Cherokee basket in this workshop. This will be a medium-sized version, about 5"-6" tall and will include design techniques such as arrows and darts. We will use #3 round reed for the entire basket and you can use 2 colors of your choice, plus natural reed. (One lighter and one darker color along with the natural reed) Split your coil of #3, keeping ½ natural, then split the remainder of the coil in half dying each ¼-coil portion in one of your colors. All weaving levels are invited to attend. This is fun basket to make!
Bring your regular basketry tools, such as your scissors, soaking tub or bowl and spray bottle. Also bring 3 plastic grocery bags to keep your damp reed in.
Note: 2-3 Baskets can be made from one coil of reed
