2010 Programs & Workshops

GBB meets the first Thursday of the month at the Larry Johnson Center. Business meetings commence at 11:00 a.m. and generally last about an hour. Sack lunch is followed with "Show and Tell" and a program starting at 1:00 p.m.

On the third Thursday of the month, GBB presents an in-depth workshop featuring a myriad of instructors, techniques and materials.

Another learning opportunity occurs every third Saturday of the month. The programs are varied and typically feature more beginner to intermediate projects. These classes are held at Sky Peaks Community Room

September 16, 2010

9:00 am – 2:30 pm

Larry D. Johnson Center
Triaxial Weave Basket
Instructor: Cindy Kinerson

Learn to weave in three different directions (as if 2 isn't enough) with this Triaxial Weave Basket.  Triaxial weave, also known as Mad Weave, is essentially twill plaiting in three different directions.  It creates beautiful patterns in the weaversthat can resemble quilt blocks.  We will be weaving these baskets out of three colors of large cardstock that Cindy will measure and cut prior to class.  The finished basket s will be approximately 9" wide by 3" high.  We will use yarn and/or waxed linen to lash the rims.  Cindy will bring plenty, but if you have something you particularly like to use, feel free to bring it.

This is NOT a class for complete beginners.  It is suggested that you've woven at least one basket with twill plaiting, bias plaiting or hexagonal weave.

Class fee is $15 members/$20 non-members + $5 materials fee
Tools to bring: scissors, at least 20 clothespins or clips, masking tape, a pencil with an eraser, and an awl.  If you have any rubber stamps and ink--bring them as we will spend the first 15 minutes decorating some of the weavers.  Cindy will have rubber stamps, some colors of ink, yarn, linen, and some extra clips and tools.  For more info please contact Cindy at 323-4502 or email

Lariat & Leather Basket

Instructor: Jeff Myers, The Quiet Woman Cattle Company

Many of you will remember the May 2009 meeting when Jeff gave us a demonstration of his unique baskets. Jeff is a native of Montana and is now a Fallon rancher and working cowboy. He will travel to Reno to teach us this special basket and it should be a real treat.

If you have a soldering iron and/or wood burning iron it would be good to bring them along with any other necessary tools, towel, apron as well as your lunch.

To sign-up or for more information please contact Jeff at 775-217-2864 or email quietwomaqncattlecompany@gmail.com
or Carol Thomas at 775-345-0161 or plantweaver@sbcglobal.net

Class fee $15 members/$20 non-member + $20 material fee which includes lariat, leather, and all materials to make a complete basket which you should be able to finish in class.

We will need your payment in full by the September 2, 2010 meeting.

October 16, 2010

Twined Tule Basket
Instructor: Sue Ann Monteleone

This class will be for beginning to intermediate twiners who would like to learn to work with tule (bulrush, scirpus).  A medium sized basket (6-8") will be created with a simple start, and plain twining.  Beginners can learn a simple start and basic twining, intermediates can choose another start, add three-strand twining and perhaps a color design. We'll cover the basic plain twining technique using local tule (Scirpus acutus), a strong, flexible material that's easy to work with.  We'll look at other kinds of baskets and objects that can be made from tule, and talk about the many uses of tule, past and present.

Supplies to bring: Necessary: sturdy scissors, dry towel, spray bottle.  Optional: small knife, awl, pan or bucket for water (wall paper trays work great).  If you're bringing your own tule: about 50 tules, dampened, pliable.

Preparation: If you are bringing your own tule: Gather tule at least one week before class and let dry in the sun. The night before class, soak the tules 1-2 hours and test bases for flexibility, soak longer if still stiff.  Wrap in wet towel.  Do not soak tules for days, they will be too soggy and may start to rot.  An easy way to dampen is to throw them in the bathtub, fill to cover, throw a beach towel on top so it gets wet, then let the tub drain.  Let sit with wet towel on top overnight.  In the morning, wrap the tules up in the damp towel, wrap all in plastic or a trash bag.  Do not leave wet tules in a wet towel for more than 24 hours - they will get yucky.

Class fee is $15 member/$20 non-member + $10 material fee (or bring your own tule.)  The class is limited to 15 people.  If you have questions, please call Sue Ann at 775/885-7541 or cell 775/721-1817
